How I Became A Comic Book Art Teacher

It's funny how life works.

When it was my turn to decide what to do with my life, I never considered that I could draw for a living. No one around me or close to me did. No one to turn to for advice. So I ignored that feeling.

Back then there weren't the careers there are now. There was no Youtube, no internet as we know it. So I ended up studying something that I thought would be more secure: Marketing. My thought was that so I could work in advertising and so I could draw the storyboards to make the commercials. Maybe I could be that someone. But I didn't believe in myself, I didn't trust that I could get to that point. So I ended up joining an agency to work as a graphic designer.

Fast forward 20 years later. A friend contacted me to ask me if I would be interested in teaching comics. They were looking for a teacher to offer a Sequential Art class.

What? A comics class at a university in Mexico?

That's how since September I became a Sequential Art teacher at Tec de Monterrey. Plot twist: It's the same University where I studied marketing all those years ago. Who would have thought.

Moral of the story: Listen to your heart. Evaluate and make the best decision, but don't ever think you won't make it. We are all going to fail at one time or another. What better than to fail and learn by doing what motivates us to wake up every day. And what better than to share that experience with the generations to come.
